Gonzo’s Quest Slot Review
- Free Falls Feature with 37,500x Payout
- Stacking Multiplier and Wild Symbols
Gonzo’s Quest slot is very easily one of the very best games NetEnt has ever created. Don’t I know it for a fact, given that 14 years after its release in 2011, I still find myself going back to the adventure-themed slot often enough.
The gameplay featuring 20 paylines and 5 reels may not seem like much at first glance, but it introduces you to a game that is filled with clever design decisions, features, and mechanics. The Avalanche Feature and stacking multipliers add to the excitement in more than one way.

Why Gonzo’s Quest Is Relevant Today?
Gonzo’s Quest gameplay is most certainly what will reel you in, although I must admit, NetEnt has done a fantastic job of crafting a game that could probably coast on its visuals alone.
If there is something that makes the game relevant today, that has to do with the fact that the features and mechanics that define Gonzo’s Quest were released more than 14 years ago, and they have been a staple of not just NetEnt’s games but others, too.
While many companies have tried to improve by offering “more” and “bigger” features, Gonzo’s Quest remained true to form and created a minimalistic yet rich ambiance that, in my opinion, beats so many other available games on the market even today.
The Core Gameplay That Makes the Game Stand Out
The gameplay is based on the avalanche mechanics, where one win can trigger another, with the symbols disappearing to be replaced by new ones, which can also lead to a win.
Besides this, every time you win, a multiplier keeps stacking up, for a maximum of 5x, which may not seem like much, yes, but it really adds up over the long term. Let’s explore the Gonzo’s Quest gameplay a step further and see what makes it so fun.
The gameplay also stands out by one other feature – the grid features symbols that resemble slabs that were cut out to build Aztec temples with, and these slabs drop into place rather than the wheels spinning.
There is a characteristic thud! that goes with each drop of the slab, and even a bit of dust rising, as the avatar of Gonzo sits next to the reels in his panoply and characteristic conquistador outfit.
Finding El Dorado – The Slot’s Core Feature
Like I mentioned before, Gonzo’s Quest is a game that relies a lot on its theme, and justly so – in it, you will be looking for El Dorado, the lost Aztec city that harbors untold riches, and it just so happens that the game will whisk you away there.
Once you trigger the free spins, the game will reveal the city itself, with up to 10 free spins available to players. Oh, and one thing that I enjoyed was that the max multiplier during the free spins can hit 15x. But things get even better!
Playing, I realized that during the Free Spins, I could win 37,500x my stake per line. How? Well, the max payout for the Blue Mask symbol is 2500x, and then you multiply this by 15x, landing you with a small fortune, much like real conquistadors must have felt encountering the gold-laden Aztec cities at first!
This amount is about 12,500x in the base game, which is still pretty decent, especially when you factor in the avalanche mechanic to keep adding to your gameplay value.
Free Falls for Even More Big Wins!
One small clarification I feel the need to make is that the Free Spins levels are actually called Free Falls, from the fact that the grid doesn’t spin, but rather, slabs get tossed from above to land on the reels instead.
Another clarification I wanted to add is that the 15x multiplier in the Free Falls (or Free Spins) level is possible because you can again get a maximum of four multipliers, but instead of the multipliers going 1x, 2x, 3x and 5x as in the base game, you get 3x, 6x, 9x, and 15x for four or more avalanches!
Even More Cool Symbols I Liked!
To trigger the Free Falls, you need the respective Free Fall Symbol – a sort of golden face carved into stone that you will recognize instantly when you see it! Then, there are the Wild Symbols, which are a question mark against grey stonework. Both add to the game variety and make for a worthwhile experience in what I can tell you is one of the best NetEnt slots there is!
